Designer Spotlight – Anne Turner

What is your “go-to” color for painting a kitchen?

For most kitchens, I prefer either a light neutral or white paint on the walls, and white for the cabinets.  For the kitchen island I typically select white or an accent color (neutral or color).

What is your favorite part about interior design?

My goal in working with my clients is to partner with them to create beautiful, functional, and timeless spaces.  I enjoy the entire process of design, but my favorite part is walking through the space at completion with my clients, and celebrating how we have accomplished the goal in a unique way.

How would you describe your style?

My style is timeless.  I aim to select materials and create designs that will endure beyond current “fads” in design.  “Fads” in design come and go, but timeless design endures.

Favorite trend of the year?

One of my favorite trends is dual purpose rooms.  With the increase in people working from home, it has created a need for spaces to function in more than one way.  In my own home, I recently turned an unused “living room” into a combined home office/tv room, by adding sliding doors, new lighting, and multi-purpose furniture.

Where do you go to get design inspiration?

Some of my best design inspiration has come from my customers.  I often use their “inspiration photos” as a starting point in their design.  Sometimes I am able to build a design around something the owner loves (favorite artwork or collection).  I also use interior design books, Instagram, and Pinterest for inspiration.

What kind of work do you usually prefer?

I originally started my career in commercial interior design, so I enjoy designing kitchens, bathrooms, and other renovation work, as it involves an interesting mix of technical ability, creativity, and style.

What do you consider before designing?

Before I start designing, I ask questions.

Who is my client and what is their personal style?  What are their design goals? Does their budget work with their design goals?

Regarding their project & space, how do they plan to use the space? What materials would work best for functionality and aesthetics?  What are the limits of the space? What is feasible from a construction standpoint?
